General & process

How does the process work, from enquiry to switch-on?

We start with a call to understand your home and energy usage, followed by a site survey to design a system that suits your roof and needs. Once you approve the design and quote, installation is usually 1–2 days on-site, with the full journey from first enquiry to switch-on typically taking 3–6 weeks.

Do I need planning permission?

Most roof-mounted domestic solar installations fall under permitted development and don't need planning permission. Listed buildings, conservation areas and some unusual roof configurations can be exceptions — we'll flag this during your survey if it applies to you.

How long does installation take?

A typical domestic install takes 1–2 days on-site. Larger systems, battery additions or commercial roofs may take longer — we'll give you a specific estimate as part of your quote.

Will solar work on my roof?

Most roofs are suitable, though orientation, pitch and shading all affect how much a system will generate. South-facing roofs perform best, but east/west-facing and even some north-facing roofs can still be worthwhile — we'll assess yours during the survey.

Costs & finance

How much does a typical installation cost?

It depends on the size of the system and whether you're adding battery storage, but most domestic installations range from a few thousand pounds for a small array up to more for a full panel-and-battery setup. We'll give you a clear, itemised quote after your survey — no hidden extras.

Are there any grants or incentives available?

Availability changes over time and by region. We'll let you know about any schemes you may be eligible for as part of your quote, and installations are zero-rated for VAT under current government rules.

Can I pay in instalments rather than up front?

Some customers choose to spread the cost via a finance provider rather than paying up front. We can point you towards options to consider — the choice of provider and agreement is between you and them.

How much can I expect to save on my energy bills?

Savings depend on your system size, household usage and whether you add a battery, but many customers see a significant reduction in their electricity bills, plus the option to sell surplus energy back to the grid. We'll talk through realistic expectations for your home during your consultation.

Technical

Do I need a battery as well as panels?

Not necessarily — panels alone will reduce your daytime electricity costs. A battery lets you store surplus energy generated during the day and use it in the evening or overnight, which typically increases your overall savings. We'll help you weigh up whether it makes sense for your usage.

What happens on a cloudy day, or at night?

Panels still generate electricity in overcast conditions, just at a lower output than direct sunshine. At night, or when panels aren't generating enough, your home draws from the grid as normal (or from a battery, if you have one).

Can I add an EV charger to the same system?

Yes — EV charging can be integrated alongside your solar and battery setup, so you can prioritise charging your car from your own generated electricity where possible. Let us know if this is something you're considering and we'll design for it.

What happens during a power cut?

This depends on your inverter and battery setup — some systems can provide backup power during an outage, others can't. If backup capability matters to you, mention it during your survey and we'll recommend equipment that supports it.

Maintenance & warranty

How long do solar panels and batteries last?

Solar panels typically carry a performance warranty of 20–25 years and continue generating well beyond that, with output degrading only slightly over time. Batteries generally carry shorter warranties, often around 10 years, depending on the manufacturer.

What's covered under warranty?

Coverage varies by manufacturer and typically includes product defects and a guaranteed minimum performance level over time. We'll go through the specific warranty terms for the equipment in your quote before installation.

Do panels need regular cleaning or maintenance?

Panels are largely self-sufficient thanks to rain, but a periodic clean can help maintain peak performance, especially in areas with heavy dust, pollen or bird activity. We offer panel cleaning and maintenance visits if you'd like it taken care of.

What happens if something goes wrong after installation?

We provide a handover in line with MCS guidelines and remain available for support, advice and maintenance long after your installation is complete — you'll always be dealing with the same team, not a call centre.
